Baildon RUFC are sad to announce the passing of Matthew Waddington.
Matthew reverted to rugby after playing hockey for Bradford Hockey Club and joined Baildon (along with Richard Moorhouse, Matt Oddy & Nick Oddy). He made his 1st XV debut in September 1997 in a 25-14 win at Knaresbrough, going on to make eleven 1st XV appearances in his debut season. He played senior rugby for Baildon throughout the late nineties and early noughties. A strong and capable 2nd rower, Matthew featured in many matches for the club during this period.
When Elliot & Olly started playing mini rugby, Matthew took up a coaching role with the mini and juniors. With his passion for rugby and Baildon RUFC and his interpersonal and business skills, he successfully took on the role of mini and juniors chair and was instrumental in unifying the mini and junior committee and the main club committee.
Both 1st XV and 2nd XV marked Matthew’s passing with a minute silence before their fixtures with Ripon RUFC on Saturday 17 February.
Our sympathies and thoughts are with Nikki, Elliot, Olly, their family and friends.
